We believe that The Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games 2010 provide a not-to-be-missed opportunity for rich, real-world learning. On these pages we propose that language students from across Kentucky play a pivotal role in contributing to the success of this event.

How?

Background
The Games have never been hosted by a country outside of Europe before. In 2010 central Kentucky expects approximately 600,000 tourists, many of them from overseas. This enormous international event will demand careful coordination between a whole range of areas: from sports and entertainment, to media and commerce, from city planning and infrastructure, to public relations and tourism.

It’s global interaction in a microcosm and all at our doorstep!

The area faces many challenges to be sure, educational challenges as well as logistical ones. Who are these future visitors to our state and what expectations will they have? How can we help make their experience here a positive one and increase the likelihood that they will return to central Kentucky?

Young language learners from across Kentucky can help! But how? By leading the way in r e c o g n i z i n g the diverse cultures that our visitors will bring to the Bluegrass!

Young people enrolled in World Languages from across the state of Kentucky are uniquely suited to play an important contributing role in such a project. Who better to help teach and inform area residents than students of foreign cultures? Who better to help anticipate the needs of tourists from foreign places and to help them feel appreciated than young people who have studied their languages and cultures?

Please take a few moments to read an outline of our proposal on the following pages and explore the many exciting projects that we are planning!
